What does a TIG welder do?
A TIG welder joins metal components using a tungsten electrode and shielding gas. TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas: an arc forms between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece. Filler metal may be used depending on the joint.
The role covers tubes, sheets and other metal components. Before welding, the welder reads the documents, prepares the workstation and checks the parts.
Read and prepare
Identify joints on drawings, review the welding instructions and check component preparation within the assigned scope. Report inconsistencies before proceeding.
Make the welds
Set up the workstation, weld to the project instructions and organize the work around the welding positions and access to each joint.
Keep the work traceable
Carry out the specified checks, complete the required identification and records, and pass on the information needed for inspections and subsequent assembly.
Skills and personal qualities
Dexterity, concentration and a steady technique are essential. The welder observes the weld pool and controls their movements. Drawing interpretation and material knowledge help them understand the required result.
Careful working, following safety instructions and keeping clear records complement the practical skills.
Working environment and teamwork
TIG welders work in fabrication workshops and on industrial sites, from prefabrication to pipework installation or work on existing equipment. Access and welding positions vary.
They work with pipe fitters, assemblers and quality control. Orbital welding differs from manual TIG: a mechanized head moves around the tube, requiring a different set of operating skills.
Training and career development
Training in welding or metal fabrication, combined with TIG practice, develops preparation, drawing interpretation and welding skills. Welding qualifications cover a defined scope and must match the process, materials and work involved.
Experience and additional training can lead to pipework specialization, orbital welding or team leadership.
