Pipe fitter

An industrial pipe fitter prepares, fits and assembles components of a piping system.

What does an industrial pipe fitter do?

An industrial pipe fitter prepares, fits and assembles components of a piping system. Drawings and isometrics become assemblies ready for installation and welding.

The fitter identifies lines, takes measurements and considers orientation, space and joint access when preparing the work.

  • Read and identify

Interpret available drawings and isometrics, identify lines and components, take the necessary measurements and report differences found on site.

  • Prepare and fit

Prepare components to the documents, adjust their positioning and check identifiers, orientation and access to joints before the welder starts.

  • Coordinate assembly

Sequence prefabrication or installation with other trades, identify completed assemblies and report outstanding points to the site management team.

Skills and personal qualities

Drawing interpretation, spatial understanding and accurate measurements are central skills. The fitter uses preparation tools, identifies discrepancies and communicates with other trades.

Pipe fitting and welding are complementary roles: assembly experience does not automatically qualify someone to make every weld.

Working environment and teamwork

Assemblies are prefabricated in the workshop, then installed or connected on site. Work may also involve modifying existing pipework and taking measurements before adjustments.

Coordination with TIG or orbital welders and assemblers helps keep access clear for subsequent operations and maintain assembly identification.

Training and career development

Training in industrial piping or metal fabrication provides foundations in materials, drawings and assembly. Experience develops isometric reading, work sequencing and the ability to report site difficulties.

Additional skills can open routes into combined pipe fitting and welding, team leadership or work preparation.
